     A little elbow grease, a few late nights, duct tape and lots of cardboard.  This was the secret recipe to 15 boats that raced in the First Annual CHANCES of Stone County Cardboard Boat Race & Demolition Derby which was held Saturday, August 7, held in Fisher Cove on Table Rock Lake at Kimberling Inn.

     Pete Peterson, board member of CHANCES, hatched the idea of the race after hearing about similar competitions.  Cardboard boat races are done all over the country.  They’re just a fun competition!  CHANCES plans to make Saturday’s race an annual event and hopes that next year’s event will double in size.

      CHANCES (Community Helping Able Neighborhood Citizens Experience Success) of Stone County is focused on enhancing the lives of Stone County residents with developmentally disabilities.  All funds raised during this event will stay in Stone County.

Best Titanic Sinking: Sea Seeker, USS Keystone, Blondie’s

            Demolition Derby: 3-way tie…The Kindly Viking, Lion’s Club & Walgreens Warriors

Top Contributor’s: Individual-Sea Seeker, Team-USS D-Day, Corporate-Ahoy’s w/2^nd place going to the Poker Run

     “Many who watched the event said they’d be willing to try their hand at building a cardboard boat next year.  This event was a huge success for our new non-profit group.  We rose over $3,000 thanks to many local sponsors and friends/family’s contributions” said President, Cathy Jo Peterson.
